Hickory Sunrise Rotary Donates Backpacks of School Supplies to Classroom Connections

Classroom Connections BackpacksOn April 16th 2014, Hickory Sunrise Rotary Club visited Classroom Connections and presented the organization with backpacks full of school supplies. From premises within Bethel United Church of Christ in Mountain View, Classroom Connections provides local teachers with school supplies which they obtain through donations and bulk purchases. The service is much appreciated by educators who often find themselves digging into their own pockets to make sure their students have the supplies they need.

A big thank you to Donald Hicks of Classroom Connections for hosting us and providing an interesting program about the workings of Classroom Connections.

Harris Brothers to Play at Rotary Jam Fundraiser for Education

Hickory Sunrise Rotary Club is delighted to announce that popular local band The Harris Brothers will play at the Rotary Jam event on May 17th 2014.

Harris Bros

“Americana” is often used to describe their style, but the Harris Brothers just call it music. Their sound is heavily influenced by traditional blues and Appalachian mountain music, jazz, country, and rock n’ roll. No matter what the Harris Brothers play, be it originals or old favorites, they have a special way of making the music their own; it’s stripped down, intense, and real, with no gimmicks.

The Rotary Jam will raise money for scholarships for deserving local youth, while providing a wonderful night of music and fun for all the family. Tickets are just $25 and include entertainment and a barbecue dinner. A variety of craft beers will be available, as well as other refreshments.

When: May 17th 2014, 4 – 8 p.m.

Where: The Warehouse, 18 2nd Street SE in downtown Hickory

Why: To raise money for scholarships for deserving local students – and enjoy good music in a great atmosphere

Hickory Sunrise Rotary Gathers Bags for Moldova Orphanage

Moldova 1Members of the Hickory Sunrise Rotary Club have participated in the “Face of the Child Project” through Little Samaritan Mission since its creation and development in 2001 by a young college student from the United States. After visits to Moldova and to the orphanages, the student believed that the children longed for something personal and individualized. Each year, Club members receive a child’s name and photo so that the bag can be made unique for that child. The bags include new clothes, shoes, hygiene items, and school supplies. Later this year, Club Member Richard Tucker will visit with the children in the orphanage that Hickory Sunrise has sponsored.
