Hickory Sunrise Rotary Club was delighted to welcome District Governor Gary Dills to our meeting on September 21st 2016.

Governor Gary  presented a program on the overall Rotary International theme of “Rotary Serving Humanity.” He shared opportunities for service and for club growth. He suggested annual goals for giving to the fight against polio and the CART campaign for Alzheimer’s research. He also mentioned the Young Leaders and Leadership District Conference that will be held in Hickory April 28-30.

In the absence of our fearless leader, Michael Wimberly, immediate past president Bob Rinehart chaired the meeting and, in a fit of reckless generosity, presented Governor Gary with not one, but two club banners.

CART Fund Update from Bill Shillito

On September 14th, Hickory Sunrise Rotary Club was pleased to welcome the well-known face of Bill Shillito, who stopped by to present an update on the work done by the Coins for Alzheimers Research Trust (CART). It was a timely reminder of what happens to the coins deposited each week in those blue buckets on the table. CART started in 1996 in South Carolina with Rotarians voluntarily emptying their pockets and purses of change at weekly meetings and has since spread to include several Rotary districts throughout the south-east United States. As of May 2016, CART had awarded $5.8 million dollars in 34 grants to recognized US research institutions. More information can be found at http://www.cartfund.org/.
